I'm Jim, of Sardonic's gym.
I'll be working on the new University as well, but I wouldn't hesitate to put this at the forefront.
I'm solid in HTML and CSS, and I'm far from proficient, but able to do PHP or javascript. MySQL, I'm still very new to, but I tend to learn quickly.
I can contribute wherever needed, from coding to data entry. I think the main thing that needs to be changed from the current site is merely to make navigation easier.
Beyond that, catch me on AIM: Jimb0wned (with a zero), or (more regularly) HiddenJimb0wned (also a zero). Email: JimSardonic@gmail.com

I know absolutely nothing about programming and I am guessing only a few people will be involved in that. However, I have strong opinions on how the site should look and function.

Hello intrepid designers... Ok, I've recevied a few ideas already to redesign the site. I would like to get some ideas down on record and discuss the pros/cons of the changes. We will end up with some ground rules aswell. Let's just toss out ideas.

I guess I need to throw my name into the hat! (Boz) What I bring to the table: HTML skills including css, Frames, IFrames, Tables, and lots of experience (not including a job that I sit for around 3-4 hours doing nada). Some ideas that can used: Drop down menu in gyms (similar to the one to check the regions rankings, press releases, etc) : This cna save time. Managers wouldn;t have to click on a fighter to change fightplans, training, or division. With the menu you could choose your training, division change and fightplans (if you use premades) and just click enter/return on your keyboard. Some managers, like myself, design plans for the specific fighters (with their names on the plan). Editing would be easier. User friendly menu: The new look, although more eye-appealing, seems to be more like the outdated one. In a poll of who uses the old look compared to the new, it was old by a 3-1 margin. What needs to be done is to keep the same concept with the links but perhaps redesign it where gym info can be accessed on one side while all other info on the other. A color change is needed erhaps to a darker color. Maybe a dark gray or perhaps black. Like to resemble an actual boxing arena. Here is one that I had used for WeBL (I couldnt get into my gym but was able to do other things. The link colros dont have to be the same). www.geocities.com/thirdman_boxing/0506/extrememain.htmSpellcheck: Some managers compain about not being able to spellcheck. This could be an option but not important. IFRAMES: With an IFRAME, this can cut out the scrolling of the menu bar and all contents will load into one square frame. Resizing the (main) frame is optional. This is what I use for the Extreme pages. Here is an example: www.geocities.com/thirdman_boxing/0304/main.htm

Morton, hi btw i dont think we've ever met, Can we establish that the site is not going to go down the road of a www.hattrick.org and have extra stats.layout and stuff for players who pay (hattrick supporters) in the near future? See any improvments would be for all players.

I've done a couple of sites, I have web positioning skills, Macromedia Fireworks and Dreamweaver experiance. I can cut html etc by hand if I have to though.
My idea would be to add more help to new gyms, such as making sure they don't set a fighter up totally wrong sort of a commentary of the pros and cons to the design they have made, suggestions for training etc. Sort of a help bot tied into the website.

Best site improvment that would help manager retention IMO is a proper chat facilility accessable from your gym page using your own gym name.

Perhaps a chat function linking directly into the IRC room -- a java console? An iframe would be a decent idea, really, anything to get rid of those terribly old-school frames To work on Navigation, perhaps something as simple as an 'onMouseOver' command, filing things away under smaller links -- and expanding to give all of the options. There's quite a few things offered through the Webl site, and if we can keep things clear and concise -- people will get more out of their stay. As far as look, are we going to go for a flashy sort of look, or something more traditional? Also, this might be a bit outlandish -- and perhaps a later project for a later time -- but perhaps a Webl wiki wouldn't be a horrible idea. I've been slightly perturbed by the lack of people willing to help with the University, and perhaps something like this will inspire people to write an article or two when they stumble across new information or have spare time. Worth a suggestion, anyway

Personally, I would like to see the registration process changed so you must have a valid email addy (some confirmation process would be sent to your email addy) and then far more primer emails for new managers in their first fortnight/month. Navigation needs the biggest overhaul for me. It's a maze that even experienced players get lost in. Many use the old look because the new one is so bad. Chat and maybe instant messaging player to player?

Perhaps while some of you make some good suggestions, you (those who can) could create a css (or a proposed layout) in the meantime so when Morton and the crew gets everything organized, you can all submit your designs.
Of course this is later on. I think Morton is looking at a 6 week process but it is good that everyone has their "portfolios" in order.
As for this, continue to list design ideas. Maybe color, layouts. I think later in the month Mort will be looking for the programming aspect. But basically now it's mainly HTML layout.
I encourage you all to perhaps post in the Lounge (I have a thread) not so much your ideas but to basically recruit those to submit ideas. This forum is for ideas and also to get together a design team.
